My Grandma's classic recipe. Simple and delicious!

5 Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced
1 small onion, finely chopped
3/4 pound lean ham, diced
2 cups milk
2 T flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
2 T butter, cut into small cubes
Grated swiss or cheddar cheese (optional)

DIRECTIONS
-Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 13x9 baking dish.
-Layer half of the potatoes, half of the ham, and half of the onion. Repeat with remaining potatoes, ham and onion.
-In a medium bowl, whisk together milk, flour, salt and pepper. Pour over all. Dot with cubed butter.
-Cover and bake 30 minutes in preheated oven. Uncover and bake another 35-45 minutes, until potatoes are tender. If desired, top with grated cheese during last 15 minutes of baking.
